Hey my lovely weirdos,
Today’s prompt is designed to wake up your senses and help you see your familiar surroundings with fresh eyes.
We tend to think of the brain as a processing machine, taking in the world exactly as it is. But it’s more like a predicting machine. We take in a little information and ‘fill in the rest’. It’s efficient – it helps us move through the day without being overwhelmed – but it also means that when we stay in the same place for a long time, or repeat the same routines, we can become almost blind to them. We can even start to feel bored in environments that are, objectively, quite wonderful.
So today, imagine you’re giving yourself new eyes. Take a slow tour of your home as if it’s somewhere you’ve never been before. This is especially lovely when you’re returning after being out. I sometimes like to pretend I’m on a podcast or a design show, describing what I can see and why it works. That part might be a step too far for you – but you get the idea.
Maybe you notice the board games that you’d love to play, or that the sun has moved around the room and that a particular chair would be lovely to sit on. Maybe it reminds you to open your curtains or admire your nik naks.
Now important!! This is NOT I repeat NOT a place to start judging yourself about dust or things you need to do. If you notice yourself starting to list things that need doing just take a really big breath, thank yourself for noticing and guide yourself back the task at hand.
Let me know how you get on!
Much Love,
Jo xx
