Beginning interest in yoga question - is there a way/regimen to begin gently, and combine resistance training with yoga?

I’m always in search of neck and shoulder release from tension and wonder if these can be done every day or should I do stretches for my torso in between?

My question would be, how do you get over your ego when practicing yoga? I always spend far too much time in my head critiquing myself rather than focusing on the actual yoga. Tricky question I know x

And how to pace. I sometimes get into the flow and don’t realise until later that I have overdone it!

Congratulations Jo - and I'm really looking forward to your podcasts. My question is - I'm 71 and can't do mat yoga (because of arthritis in my knees). What are the best all round fitness and flexibility exercises for those of us with restricted movement?

Following on some of these questions on tight muscles...for those of us who love walking, often walking in the city on hard pavement, is there a gentler way to walk? Or to stretch to keep calves and thighs from tensing up?

Why do we tighten up as we age? Is there a way to prevent it other than to keep moving—I mean diet etc? Don’t mean to make it sound like I don’t want to move. And is it the muscles, the tendons, ligaments or all of it?

Looking forward to the podcast!

So... Yoga classes are predominantly female, but the benefits are universal - how would you 'sell' the benefits of Yoga to men?

How to match breathing (ie inhale and exhale) to movement in yoga? Or is that not something I even need to think about?

Expand full comment
Barbara Prothero's avatar

I came here to ask the same thing. I’d like to understand the logic of which movement should have an in breath and which should

be on the out breath.

You’ve articulated this so much better than I did!

Not at all - but I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that’s struggling to figure out the breathing. Jo will set us straight 😀

Hi Jo, Congratulations on starting your podcast! My question is what yoga exercises can help with posture? Particularly slouching of the shoulders, to help realign, to stand up straight and have good posture? Wish you the best in your new endeavors!

Really excited for you Jo. How about clarity on how best to use yoga to retain and even gain muscle mass as we age?

Wonderful- good for you- and all of us! So many great questions here already.

My comment is a thank you- for allowing patience toward myself. Once a very consistent and thorough yoga class attendee (20 years of yoga class twice a week until 2020 when the studio closed.) I have been sporadic at best to incorporate yoga into my life since 2020. Your words and kindness has been an insight into ways to let go of self criticism. Thank you and good luck!
